Indonesian President Joko Widodo congratulated Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto after winning the presidential contest after just one round of voting.
Prabowo announced a “victory for all Indonesians” after receiving close to 60% of the vote.
The stock market saw a 2.2% increase, and the rupiah strengthened by 0.3%.
Prabowo’s opponents, former governors Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, declared they would look into claims of “systematic and massive fraud.”
Independent analysts found no indications of widespread electoral fraud.
The election was deemed a testament to the durability and strength of the Indonesian people’s commitment to the democratic process and electoral institutions by the U.S. State Department.
With almost 40% of the ballots counted, Prabowo is ahead by roughly 56%.
The official results are expected to be released by March 20.
